Q&A with Brooke White, Miss America Judge and American Idol Finalist

Friday, January 29, 2010 0 Comments

You've heard it, seen it, and hopefully, shared the news that Miss America will be the proud endorser of Artistry brand -- and that the new Miss America will be crowned this Saturday evening (January 30) in Las Vegas. (Watch it on The Learning Channel (TLC) at 8 p.m. ET).

This sponsorship is sure to lend credibility and generate some excitement around Artistry and Amway Global. Without a doubt, it's worth mentioning to customers and prospects. A prestige beauty brand that's being used by Miss America contestants and endorsed by the organization? I think that could pique some interest, even if a prospective customer has never heard of Artistry brand before!

To add to the excitement, the Miss America 2010 Pageant is going to be judged by a diverse panel -- from a successful comedian to an Olympic gold medalist to an accomplished actress. We asked a couple of the the judges (a few) questions so we could get a snapshot of who will be selecting the next Miss America. After all, she'll be endorsing Artistry skin care and cosmetics so we're more curious than the average viewer.

I am fortunate enough to share the responses of  American Idol finalist from Season 7 -- Brooke White. This talented singer and thoughtful young woman is so beautiful inside and out, it's no wonder she isn't in the pageant herself! She is an inspiration to young women everywhere and serves as an excellent example of someone who is following her dream and achieving her goals. I checked out her website (http://www.realbrookewhite.com/) and suggest you do too. Not all of us may be American Idol fans, but we probably admire people like Brooke who are hard-working, humble, commited, and compassionate. (There are so many IBOs who could be described with the same adjectives -- and the same words describe so many of the Miss America contestants!)

Question: How has "American Idol" shaped your future?
I often get asked the similar question, "How did American Idol change your life?" and the way I can most accurately respond is by saying "How did American Idol NOT change my life?". While the road ahead is still appears long and uncertain, Idol gave me the opportunity to connect with millions of people in their living rooms across America, as well as around the world.  Having that exposure and connection with so many people has helped me to build a solid fan base that I have grown to know and love, those whom I can count on to support my artistic endeavors even beyond picking up the phone to cast their votes. In addition to that exposure, I have been able to establish and maintain incredibly valuable relationships within the industry. The networking opportunity that the show provides is unlike any other avenue, being a "people person", I've just truly enjoyed the chance to meet and get to know so many talented, hardworking and respectable individuals. Because of the goodness of these people, I get to continue to live out my dream, for that I am grateful. None of us get very far on our own...

Question: If you hadn't been one of the finalists in Season 7, do you think you would have continued to pursue your music career?
I would like to think that I would have persisted and while I know that music will always play a permanent role in my life, I think that had I not progressed on American Idol, I was definitely going to re-think the order of my priorities and not have pursued it with the intensity that I had. Having gone farther in the competition than I could have ever imagined, I am pleasantly surprised by the drive and ambition that I have since developed from the show, as well as a stronger work ethic. This business is a tough one, to think I have sustained this far has been a blessing and a testament to my own personal growth. While I someday also look forward to taking the time to be a mother and having a family, I'm thankful that I've also had a real chance to discover, develop, and pursue my talents ...  it  has been a dynamic and challenging learning experience that has changed the course of my life forever.

Question: You come from fairly humble beginnings. Now you're a star. How do you stay grounded?
I always joke that I'm still just a twinkle... not quite a star:) Though I know I most likely have done a little changing, and have experienced some growth, I still feel very much like the same girl because of the support group around me. While I'm not suggesting that my family is perfect or that we've got it all figured out, they are everything to me, my relationship with my parents has been a constant in my life, they have given me their unconditional love, have instilled valuable principles that have yet to let me down and provided me with a solid foundation that I could never forsake. They sacrificed so much for my siblings and I so that we could have every opportunity to develop and fulfill our potential. My faith and my relationship with God is also a strong anchor in my life, giving me a sense of worth, purpose and accountability. And of course my marriage is another essential piece of the puzzle. Being the overly emotional and intense artsy fartsy gal that I am, requires a strong counter part to help me achieve balance and rationality... my husband Dave being my calm and level headed compliment is absolutely the one I can turn to, to help me find stability amongst the madness, reminds me not to take myself too seriously... he's the man.

Question:How would you define "success"?
I'm not sure that I have an all encompassing or profound definition of success, though I'd like to think that I have experienced it... more than once, more than twice... all the time. For me success is found in the moment I'm truly present in my life and being proactive. When I have just simply had a thought about something I wanted to achieve and then persisted and turned that thought into an action until it came to fruition. Whether it be the little things like clean out the fridge, run for 20 minutes on a treadmill, or the big stuff like audition for American Idol, write a song, record an album --  they are all opportunities to make a decision, commit, and follow through... to me this is success. I'm not sure if there is ever this grand ending in sight called "success" ...  it's within reach along the way for the rest of time, and that is good news to me.

Question:Lots of people have ambitions they haven't yet realized. What advice do you have for them?
Not sure if I'm qualified to give advice, but if I had any it would be first, TRY... nothing happens until we try, and we have to try all the time. Figure out what your strengths and talents are by taking advantage of every opportunity. Then make decisions, set goals and pursue them with passion, be true ...  and lastly, be patient.

Brooke White on success. (Click here if the video does not appear in your browser.)

Say I do to vitamin D!

Is it time you say I do to Nutrilite Vitamin D?

Maybe so!

Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium for strong bones and teeth AND new research shows that it also supports breast, colon, and immune system health. This has my attention! Bet you could share this with customers and get their attention too.

Studies show that most people don’t get enough of this beneficial nutrient, and it’s hard to get enough vitamin D through diet alone unless you eat a lot of fish - salmon, sardines, mackerel, or herring.(Now, I can't say I crave sardines or herring -- not ever, to be honest.)

You've probably heard the buzz! Many health pros are now recommending an increase to the Recommended Dietary Allowance for vitamin D, suggesting that you get a minimum of 2,000 International Units (IU) each day.

That's alot!

But one tablet a day of  Nutrilite Vitamin D3 2000 IU plus vitamin K2 gives you that.

Beats drinking 20 glasses of milk a day to get the same amount of the
naturally occurring form of vitamin D your body produces when exposed to sunlight.

D3. It's available now! Why wait? With all the media coverage lately on Vitamin D, the timing is right to promote this product.

Go for it!

Some of us are more social than others ... how 'bout you?

Monday, January 18, 2010 5 Comments
Category: , ,

Everybody's talking about social media. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube ... it's all the buzz! It's a way to relate and communicate about just about everything under the sun. I resisted it at first. Too high school for me -- but then, I kept getting asked to join Facebook by people I admire and respect. I decided if Cindy, Beth, and John were into it, I could be too. So I am on Facebook and I have connected with people all over North America -- family, friends, IBOs, and fellow  writers. I check it at least once a day--and I don't always comment or read everyone's comments -- but I love it. I've reconnected with so many people from the past -- discovered some new places and websites, thanks to recommendations of friends on Facebook -- and I have linked friends to my blog posts when I feel they could be relevant. It's made me more aware of what's going on -- more in tune with what books, products, music and movies people are buying and using and loving. So, yes I am a fan of social media. I like blogs and blogging and I find Facebook an adventure. I haven't really gotten into Twitter -- yet.

So, how bout you? Are you on Facebook? Do you tweet? I'd love to hear what you think.

We know IBOs are on Facebook and some of you might be like I was at first. Privacy settings? What do I do with those? Profile? Should everyone be able to see my profile? Can I talk about Amway Global on Facebook? What's okay to say or not?

If you're new to social media or even if you're using it, be sure to check out the great article online at AmwayGlobal.com that presents the Top 10 Social Media Practices. It's a quick read with valuable tips.

Check it out -- then check out Facebook. You're about to discover a whole new world. Welcome to the future!

Add some color to your sales story!

You may have heard about the Get Your Daily Dose of Color Phytonutrient Campaign (it launched Oct 15) if you read all the OZ blogs and follow NUTRILITE on Facebook or Twitter, but have you considered how this campaign can help you tell the NUTRILITE story when you're selling vitamins, minerals, and supplements to customers? Seriously, you need to check this campaign out NOW!

The NUTRILITE Phytonutrient Spectrum campaign, Get Your Daily Dose of Color launched this past week. For 75 years, the NUTRILITE brand stood apart from the competition with certified organic farms and products created using whole plant concentrates. Recent research studies confirm that diets rich in phytonutrients -which are the natural nutrients in plants - will help lead to optimal health. Thank goodness for research! It validates what NUTRILITE brand has known for a long time. This worldwide reasarch on the value of phytonutrients provides a unique opportunity to Amway Global Independent Business Owners (yes --you!!!!) to become "phytonutrient experts" with your customers and potential customers.

The campaign launched on October 15 in New York City with a big media event and lots of hoopla. Very cool.

America's Phytonutrient Report, sponsored by the Nutrilite Health Institute, was unveiled in NYC, revealing that Americans aren't eating enough fruits and vegetables in the following color categories:

  •     Green - 69% of Americans fall short.(spinach, green beans/EGCG)
  •     White - 76% of Americans fall short.(cauliflower, onions, mushrooms/quercetin)
  •     Red - 78% of Americans fall short. (tomatoes, raspberries/lycopene)
  •     Orange/Yellow - 79% of Americans fall short. (lemons, oranges, carrots/alpha- and beta-carotene)
  •     Blue/Purple - 80% of Americans fall short. (plums, eggplant, grapes/reservatrol)

This brilliant campaign continue through 2010 -- and it encourages consumers to Get Your Daily Dose of Color, first through fruits and vegetables and then through NUTRILITE supplements with phytonutrients from the color groups missing from their diets.

Sounds great, right? So how do you get the full story and then share it with others?

First, visit www.nutrilite.com/color. You and your customers can take an assesment to see which colors are missing from your diet. And, you can learn more about the fruits and vegetables in each color category--and the phytonutrients and their health benefits. I just spent 20 minutes on this site ... it's bright, fun, and informative. It also made me want to visit a farmer's market right away!

You'll be able to share this colorful story with your customers using new marketing tools that are coming soon to the Amway Global website: NUTRILITE Phytonutrient Spectrum Brochure, NUTRILITE Organic Farming Brochure, and the NUTRILITE Phytonutrient Spectrum Handheld Tool.

Expand upon these pieces with selling tools available online, including the Show and Sell DVD/CD-ROM, DOUBLE X Brochure and Leave-behind, and the Concentrated Fruits and Vegetables Leave-behind.

Also, be sure to check out the GIVE THE BEST Campaign ... it contains a great DOUBLE X promo!

Don't forget! Eat your fruits and veggies to get all your colors in your diet. And tell your customers about this, too. After all, you're in a people business -- and this business is about helping make people's lives better -- and, in this case, you can help make lives healthier!

So, let's do it!

The leaves are changing color in the midwest. Sooner than usual this year.

It's apple-tastic time in Michigan. Fabulous. Apple crisp warm from the oven.

Amway Global just launched some OUTSTANDING new catalogs and products: Optimal Health, True Beauty, and Essential Home. Check out the new PERSONAL ACCENTS jewelry, too. WOW!

Many of us are wearing sweatshirts or sweaters once the sun sets -- and in the morning.

School buses are everywhere! Takes longer to get to work in the morning but that's okay -- longer to listen to music on my way to the office.

Halloween is going to be here before we know it. I plan to be a witch. I play that part well every year. LOL.

I will overdose on candy corn again in October. Guaranteed. (But I feel less guilty if I work out and take NUTRILITE Supplements.)

Gift-giving season is coming our way. Are you ready?

The retail campaign, GIVE THE BEST, has launched to help make sure your season is bright and bountiful. The special offers include everything from the new LEGACY OF CLEAN home care to PERSONAL ACCENTS jewelry.

Do you re-use boxes and plastic containers?

Monday, August 03, 2009 4 Comments
Category: , , , ,

I sure do! I save boxes and containers of all kinds to store paper clips, extra buttons, rubber bands, and much more. Many boxes I re-use to package gifts or send something to someone. My recent find? The LEGACY OF CLEAN sturdy plastic containers for SA8+ Bioquest Powder Detergent, TRI-ZYME Detergent Booster (that stuff really works!), and All-Fabric Bleach.

I use L.O.C. Multi-purpose cleaner to wipe out containers like this and rinse them thoroughly before I re-purpose them. Probably not a good idea to re-use these for food -- it's not a food container, but it's great for stuff. And I excel in collecting stuff. Can you relate? I have stuff here, there, and everywhere. Now, I can store lots of this stuff in the LEGACY OF CLEAN containers. Oh, I could put packs of Multi-purpose towelettes in those containers. (Wow. That's a swell idea, don't you think?)

Recently, I was given the privilege of trying the new LEGACY OF CLEAN home care products. Love 'em! Can't say enough about how well they perform and how good they make me feel about being environmentally-sensitive. And even though some plastic containers aren't recyclable, they're re-usable -- and that's a good thing. So, what can you, me, and your customers re-use our LEGACY OF CLEAN containers for?  I'll start the ideas flowing here, but please comment and share your ideas of how you can and will re-use the LEGACY OF CLEAN detergent and bleach containers.

Storage of:

  • screws, nails, tacks
  • small holiday ornaments
  • playing cards
  • golf balls
  • marbles
  • shell collections
  • photos
  • crayons, pencils, pens, chalk, and more in the kids'  play room, your craft room, etc.
  • quilting squares, yarn, embroidery thread

Other ideas? Tell us. We'd all love to hear from you!

Here's a tip from our home care marketer: Donate the handy containers to day care centers, churches, and schools for arts and craft projects. It's a fab way to shine more light on the LEGACY OF CLEAN brand name!

When are they available for customers? Soon, very soon! LEGACY OF CLEAN products are coming in September. Just in time to tackle football jerseys and other tough laundry tasks that come with the start of school and fall sports.

Get ready to sparkle with LEGACY OF CLEAN products --

and shine with innovative ideas for re-using the rectangular plastic containers.

Gifts galore for dads, grads, birthdays, newlyweds, and parents-to-be

Life is full of celebrations. Don't know about you, but I find the invitations are rolling in these days for graduation celebrations, birthday parties, wedding showers, baby showers -- and Father's Day is coming soon. (It's June 21 in the USA.)

Here a few of my faves for gift giving, a few recommendations from marketers, and let's hear recommendations from IBOs and your customers, too. What do you like to give as gifts? Artistry? Tolsom? Ribbon Gift Collections? Personal Accents Jewelry? Do tell!

Let's start with Graduations. My absolute fave for both high school and college grads is Celebrate Gift Collection ($40 retail), but Guy Gear (74-9210), Treasure (74-8310), and Pamper (74-8910) are good choices, too. Our Personal Accents marketer recommends the Time Management Watch for him (74-5359) or the Croco-dial Rock Watch for her (74-5210).

Did you know Father's Day is the fourth biggest gift-giving occasion in the USA? (Mom's Day ranks higher.)

What could be better than the gift of choice for your dad or for grampa? Ribbon Guy Gear (74-9210) Collection is a popular choice, and we predict many of the new-for-2009 Omaha Steak (74-9181) and Sony (74-9161) Gift Collections will be given to guys this year. I also recommend these three collections for birthday boys.

Have you considered the Tolsom Skin care products for Dad? These products are specially formulated for men and they feature the exclusive T-10 Complex that conditions, smooths, and moisturizes men's skin. Sounds too good to be true? Maybe, but guess what? It IS true! Check out the full line of Tolsom, from shave gel (10-0917) to protective lotion with SPF 15 (10-0049).

Don't forget Nutrilite health and fitness products if Dad is active and health-conscious. Check out the full line of products for energy, strength, hydration and recovery. If Dad hasn't tried the energy bars and sports drinks before, he's in for a real treat!

Maybe Dad needs a more stylish gift like Metal Aally Cufflinks (74-5364) or the Handle It Jewelry Valet  (74-5368) from the Personal Accents Collection. There's also an array of men's celebrity and designer fragrances online.

Showers and weddings coming up?

Ribbon I Do (74-9510), Gourmet Gear (74-9610) and Distinctive (74-8210) are excellent choices. But check out all the Ribbon Gift Collections for the perfect collection for the newlyweds. They all contain name brand products, from functional to fun, stylish to practical. I know from the thank-you notes I've received, Ribbon Gift Collections are a BIG hit with newlyweds, even if they're registered at a retail store. This gives them an opportunity to "fill in" if they still need pillows or a blender -- or to treat themselves to something special.

For parents-to-be and baby, consider Arrival (74-8810) Gift Collection and for the new mom, Pamper (74-8910) Gift Collection. You might also want to consider Kozy Kids diapers and baby supplies. The new moms that work with me rave about the diapers and wipes. Even if you don't give them as a gift, you may want to suggest them to customers who have babies and toddlers. Oh, just thought of something. You could add some SA8 laundry detergent and L.O.C. multipurpose cleaner to the Kozy Kids supplies and create a basket of goodies -- a gift that's sure to please if the newbie parents are on a tight budget.

Gifting should be a pleasure for the giver as well as the receiver. AmwayGlobal.com helps make gift-giving the pleasure it should be. Enjoy your celebrations this season! And let your gift-giving customers know what's available through your business for their gift-giving needs.

The following trademarks are registered by Amway Global: Artistry, Tolsom, Personal Accents, Nutrilite, Kozy Kids, SA8, L.O.C.

The art of selling and respect for those who do

Wednesday, May 13, 2009 1 Comments
Category: , , ,

Recently, the New York Times printed an article by Ben Stein (lawyer, writer, actor, economist) entitled, "The Sales Profession: Attention Must Still Be Paid." What a fabulous article. In it, he talks about selling being an art -- and quotes Arthur Miller as salespeople being out there "on a smile and a shoe shine."

Selling is learning the product(s) you're selling so well, you can describe the benefits, advantages, and features of the product despite interruptions, chitchat, and all the things that can interfere and compete with a sales conversation between a salesperson and a customer.

It is understanding human nature so you can figure out how the attributes or benefits of your product solve the needs of or fulfill the desire of each customer.

An effective salesperson isn't just a product pro. An effective salesperson is a people expert.

For those of you who sell with ease and grace, I applaud you. You have my respect and admiration.

Supplement sales take a surge while salaries and stocks take a dip

Wednesday, May 06, 2009 2 Comments
Category: , , , , ,

Surprising but true: Now may be an ideal time to sell vitamins and supplements!

According to recent reports cited in a New York Times article, consumers are purchasing greater amounts of vitamins and supplements, especially multivitamins, fish oil capsules, and antioxidants. Seems surprising given that there has been much financial stress since Fall 2008. But with the loss of jobs and the reduced health care benefits, many consumers are taking preventative measures, like swallowing a multivitamin daily.

What's this mean for you and your business? Opportunity to sell the world leading brands of vitamins and supplements -- NUTRILITE. Strike up a conversation with a customer about the high cost of health care and the reduction of health care benefits -- mention how important it is to take care of yourself and your family -- to be preventative rather than reactive when it comes to health & wellness. Explain what you do for your health -- like take a daily vitamin or rely on Glucosamine to help with joint flexibility. When you empathize with someone's circumstances and feelings -- and you share a solution or similar story, you're bound to earn their respect and build a relationship. You're also apt to make a sale if you have a product that promises to solve a problem or fill a need for the customer.

Here a few products you might want to mention to customers:

NUTRILITE Daily Multivitamin/Multimineral (90/10-4174)

NUTRILITE Antioxidant Complex (90/A-8603)

NUTRILITE Concentrated Fruits and Vegetables (60/10-0648)

NUTRILITE Glucosamine-7 (120/10-4664)

Ocean Essentials Balanced Health with Omega 3s (90/A-8914)

Here's to healthy sales and a robust business!

Fave Momisms, jewelry, fragrances, and more

Nobody speaks, teaches, scolds, praises or loves like a mom. Nobody cooks, cleans, advises, or brags like a mother. And nobody deserves her own day or deserves a gift more than a mother. In celebration of Moms everywhere (Grandmothers, too), let's play a game.

Did your mom have her own way of saying things or did she have the universal momisms we all like to share and chuckle about?

Today as a mom, do you find yourself saying the same things you swore you'd never say to your own kids? Are there moments when you respond to your spouse or your children or your niece and nephews, that you suddenly feel you've become your mother?

I had that moment just last week when I said, "Be careful what you wish for cause it just might come true."

Here are a few more momisms from my friend and the Personal Accents Jewelry and Fragrance Collection marketer, Gina:

Because I said so.

Close the door.

Were you born in a barn?

Money does not grow on trees.

If everyone jumped off a cliff, would you jump too?

If I've told you once, I've told you a thousand times.

I've got eyes in the back of my head ... that's how I know!

If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.

Doesn't a mom who gave you momisms to share with your own kids deserve something special this Mother's Day?
(the answer is yes)

Make the gift memorable. Make it special. Make it shine. Make it scent-sational.

Give your mom or grandmother a gift that says,

I love you for all you taught me and all the memories you gave me.

It really is about relationship ...

"and time can do so much" to quote the lyrics to Unchained Melody, an all-time favorite song of mine.

Seriously, your long-standing customers are who you have a relationship with, correct? You know what they like, don't like, need and want -- you know about their family, their lifestyle, and well--you've come to trust each other over time. They know you won't do them wrong--and you know they prefer to buy from you. Your personal service is a plus they don't want to do without.

Today, I've been thinking a lot about how important relationships are personally and professionally--how you can't live without 'em and how we often take them for granted.

Take a moment right now and consider key relationships in your life. When was the last time you said thank you to a loyal customer? Have you ever filled a co-worker's candy jar, just because? What about sending a sentimental card to let someone know how much you admire and respect him?

Oh, one last thing.

For those of you who read my blog and comment regularly ... thank you. You are my inspiration!

Right-brainers unite! The future is ours ...

At least that's what Daniel H. Pink proposes in his book, A Whole New Mind. Talk about a thought-provoking and motivating book! Pink discusses the Conceptual Age and how our reasoning (left-brain aptitudes) need to be complemented by high-concept, high-touch senses.

1. Design. Not just about products, services, etc. as functional but also as beautiful and emotionally engaging.

2. Story. The essence of persuasion, communication and self-understanding -- not just about data and factual information.

3. Symphony. Not just focus. It's about seeing the big picture, crossing boundaries, creating a new whole by forming pieces in a new way.

4. Empathy. As we move forward, we must be able to understand what makes someone tick, to forge relationships, and to care for others.

5. Play. In the Conceptual Age, in work and in life, we all need to play. Humor, games, laughter -- enormously beneifical.

6. Meaning. Beyond the material things. Less about stuff and more about meaning. We long for significance and spiritual fulfillment.

Pink tells us these six senses will guide our lives and shape our world -- and now's the time to embrace and master them in work and in life.

Read this book! Even if you don't agree with everything Pink believes, this book will inspire, motivate, and most importantly, make you think about the way you live and work.

Check out Daniel Pink's website.
