- Giving and getting
-
It's Monday morning. I'm waiting for my computer to boot up, and I glance at the August calendar sitting on my desk. No birthdays or anniversaries today in the department, but the quote on the top of the calendar catches my eye. Not sure who said this, but it makes me pause and ponder. (And I ponder so well, I am told.)
"We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give."
So, let's ponder...
Is it possible to give and get on the job?
Is it possible to be rewarded in more ways than monetarily on the job? (It is where I work, but I consider a smile a reward--it's all in how you look at it, I suppose.)
Can we enrich lives as a salesperson? as a copy director? as a project manager? as an IBO? Why, yes! How do we influence others by being a leader? On the job, no matter what we do to get paid, we are given the opportunity to enrich lives. It's true. We don't necessarily have to work for a non-profit organization to give to others. We give to others every day when we participate in life.
Consider your job. How do you give while getting paid for what you do? What rewards do you receive on the job beyond your salary or wages that adds to your life? How do people give to you while getting paid for what they're doing? How do we all "work" together to make a living and make all of our lives better?
When you're selling products and services to others, how do the questions I've asked directly apply to you in the sales role?
Consider this. You can look at your job as just a way to make a living, or you can look at your job as a way to enrich lives. You can embrace your job, whatever it is, and give it all you've got - or you can just tolerate it. But the more you give, the more you get - that's just gotta be true!
It's a giving and getting world. Do you agree?

About Susan Julien-Willson
I enjoy attending writing/marketing/advertising seminars and conferences for the inspiration and motivation they provide and I also love participating in a monthly writing group and a book club. On weekends, I am frequently found in the poetry/fiction/business/music sections of Schuler Books, my fave local bookstore, or reading magazines and sipping coffee in their café. You can also look for me on weekends at my family cottage in the summer or movie theaters or the mall in the winter. Evenings and weekends, you might spot me out walking when the weather is warm and sunny, or at the Alticor fitness center a few times a week. I love clothes and jewelry as an expression of my personal style. Because I tend to spend most of my time working, working out, or writing poetry, I don?t do the extent of volunteer work I?d like to, but I have a long list of favorite charities I support, including Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Easter Seals, American Cancer Society, Hospice of Michigan, Gilda's Club, and Habitat for Humanity.
