Attitude is everything

Read a quote today from Elbert Hubbard (1856-1915), an American publisher and former soap salesman.

He was quoted as saying,

"We awaken in others the same ATTITUDE OF MIND we hold toward them."

Hmmmm. Interesting. I agree with this wholeheartedly. Do you?

How does this play out in your life as a family member? an IBO? a consumer? a service provider? a friend? a neighbor?

When has your attitude positively impacted the outcome or negatively impacted the results of a situation or issue in your professional or personal life?

How does a positive attitude help you sell and sponsor?

Looking forward to hearing from you!

The vast majority of the time, this is correct. Then, there are those who choose to have a bad day no matter what you do. I believe they are here to test us and specicially, here, our ability to maintain our own decided attitide of gratitude.

Well, I agree and also in a reverse kind of way. Another person holding a positive attitude can awaken a positive attitude in me, when I'm exposed to their positive attitude.

Case in point, and I am staying "on topic" :)

Spotlight Showcase in Portland last weekend, Joe Pici presenting (brilliantly, I might add) on selling skills, including building rapport with customers... rapport is the #1 "product" we deliver to our customers, he says.

Joe provided some new insights for me that awakened an interest in the Ribbon program from another perspective. People with experience with the program will laugh at me, but until then, I hadn't really been too excited about Ribbon even though I know it was your baby last year.

But what a positive, non-controversial product cluster with which to approach friends and others as potential customers? And following from their having a positive purchasing experience with me on that, the opportunity to subsequently approach them with other product lines which are more long-term consumable, repeat purchase in nature?

So in a reverse sort of way, being exposed to Joe's positive attitude has awakened a more positive attitude in me!!! As Joe would say... LOL :)

This is part of a sociological theory that describes one's own sense of self as a reflection of how one perceives the rest of the world to expect one to be. To modify the behavior of others, you project onto them your expectations and desires, and most people will adapt to some degree to accommodate you. Dramatically alter the overall environment and produce a different set of expectations, and there can be a huge change of goal setting, relative values, and priorities.

This is why things like association and open meetings, seminars and conferences are so crucial, because they reinforce positive mental attitude, which you carry back and project onto others. They also help keep priorities and goals in line. Peer pressure is a powerful tool, and important to us as human beings.

When people think "hospitality" and "welcoming," that is attitude more than anything. The positive aspects of personality often strike a chord within others, just like meeting someone in a foul mood can darken one's own day.

I wish I could give a positive example of this in selling and sponsoring, but I'm not yet in the business, still trying to find someone to sponsor me. In my past sales experience though, every good day started out with me being in a good mood. I had bad days on days I felt good, but I never had good days on days I felt (and projected as) bad.

About Susan Julien-Willson

I enjoy attending writing/marketing/advertising seminars and conferences for the inspiration and motivation they provide and I also love participating in a monthly writing group and a book club. On weekends, I am frequently found in the poetry/fiction/business/music sections of Schuler Books, my fave local bookstore, or reading magazines and sipping coffee in their café. You can also look for me on weekends at my family cottage in the summer or movie theaters or the mall in the winter. Evenings and weekends, you might spot me out walking when the weather is warm and sunny, or at the Alticor fitness center a few times a week. I love clothes and jewelry as an expression of my personal style. Because I tend to spend most of my time working, working out, or writing poetry, I don?t do the extent of volunteer work I?d like to, but I have a long list of favorite charities I support, including Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Easter Seals, American Cancer Society, Hospice of Michigan, Gilda's Club, and Habitat for Humanity.
